Is LASIK Surgery Right for Me?
More than 20 million people around the world have undergone LASIK eye surgery, the vast majority with successful outcomes. LASIK eye surgery is a common method of treatment to improve vision and reduce, or, in some cases, completely eliminate the need for glasses or contact lenses. The surgery can sound too good to be true for some with vision problems, so it’s important to know if laser vision correction is a good fit for your eye issues.
LASIK surgery can treat nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism, but be sure to talk with your eye doctor about the procedure. It is not ideal for those whose eye glasses or contact lens prescription is still changing, those with thin corneas or suffering from certain eye conditions like dry eyes. A simple conversation with your eye surgeon will help you determine if you’re a strong candidate.
Questions to determine candidacy for laser eye surgery
- Are you 18 years old? You must be 18 to have LASIK performed.
- Have your eye glasses or contact lens prescriptions remained stable for at least one year?
- Are your eyes healthy? LASIK can only be performed if your eyes are free from eye diseases or corneal abnormalities, like infections or scars.
- Can you stop wearing contacts for up to four weeks before your initial LASIK consultation? Because contact lenses can change the shape of your cornea, your eye doctor will ask you to stop wearing them to prepare your eyes for surgery.
- Are you pregnant or nursing? Your vision correction can change during pregnancy or while breastfeeding, therefore, eye surgeons will often wait until a safe period after your pregnancy or nursing period.
Questions to ask you eye doctor about LASIK
- What results can I expect from LASIK surgery?
- If LASIK surgery does not meet my expectations, what is a next step in treatment?
- How long should I refrain from work?
- How long should I refrain from outdoor activity?
- What is the timeline for healing and follow-up care after LASIK?
Preparing for LASIK surgery
After you’ve spoken with your eye doctor and determined you’re a good candidate for the laser vision correction, you’ll likely go through a variety of tests and procedures before the actual surgery. In addition to an eye exam, your surgeon will take measurements of different areas of your eyes, perform a retinal exam and assess for dry eye.
Each person’s vision and health story is different, making it vitally important to have open conversations with your eye doctor about your eye and general health when considering LASIK surgery.
